Questions
How does the calculator work out the gain?
It matches each sale to the shares it came from under your country's rule, the same calculation the PortfolioTrackr capital gains report runs for customers: the Section 104 pool in the UK, first in, first out with the wash-sale rule in the US, the adjusted cost base in Canada and the weighted average cost (PMPA) in France. The rule for each country is listed on this page.
Which tax year does it use?
Your country's own tax year: 6 April to 5 April in the UK, 1 July to 30 June in Australia, and the calendar year everywhere else. Choose the year in the report.
What about trades in another currency?
Enter each trade in the currency you paid, and use one currency for every trade in the same ticker. For the UK, Canada, Australia, France, Germany and Spain, each purchase and each sale is converted to your country's currency at the exchange rate of its own day; when we hold no rate for a trade date, today's rate is used and the report says so. For the US, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland and other countries, each sale stays in its own currency, and a mix of currencies is totalled in US dollars at today's rate.
What if a share was split?
Enter each trade as it happened, with the quantity and price of that day. For the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, France, Germany and Spain, the report restates trades from before a split we have on file and names the split in its details. If the report does not name your split, or your country is not one of these, enter the trades from before the split in post-split shares.
Does it handle crypto?
Yes. Set the row's type to Crypto. The US wash-sale rule does not apply to crypto, Germany treats crypto held for more than a year as a tax-free private sale, and France taxes crypto under its own rules, so French crypto sales are left out of the report.
Is my data saved?
No. The trades you type are used to work out the report and are not stored. Reload the page and they are gone.
