Track Your Interactive Brokers Portfolio Automatically

By James Whitfield · October 16, 2026 · 9 min read

Interactive Brokers gives you the account, but not a clean, always-current picture of how every position sits against your own numbers. This guide shows how a read-only Flex Query connection syncs your IBKR positions and real trade history into PortfolioTrackr automatically, exactly how to set it up, and the honest limits worth knowing before you start.

The problem: your IBKR account is accurate but not easy to read daily

Interactive Brokers is one of the most capable brokers in the world, but its interface is built for traders, not for a quick daily portfolio read. If you hold stocks, ETFs and options across several currencies, pulling a single clear view of cost, value and gain can mean exporting statements or clicking through screens.

The common workarounds all have a catch:

What most investors actually want is simpler: their real IBKR positions and trade history flowing into one place automatically, alongside everything else they own, without handing over a trading password. That is exactly what a read-only sync is for.

What the Interactive Brokers sync does, concretely

PortfolioTrackr connects to Interactive Brokers with a read-only Flex Query token, so no password is ever shared and nothing can be traded through the connection. The token only lets PortfolioTrackr read a report you define, never place or cancel orders.

Here is what the connection actually does once it is live:

Because the imported portfolio is read-only, you cannot edit those positions by hand. That is deliberate: the numbers mirror IBKR, so your cost and value stay honest rather than drifting after a manual tweak. If you also run accounts elsewhere, the one dashboard for Alpaca, IBKR, Schwab and Robinhood sits all of them side by side.

Why a read-only token matters

A read-only Flex Query token is the safest way to connect a broker because it cannot move money or trade. You are sharing a one-way reporting feed, not account control. If you want the broader picture of how read-only connections work across providers, our guide on connecting a brokerage account to a portfolio tracker walks through the model.

How to set up the IBKR Flex Query connection step by step

Setup takes a few minutes inside the IBKR Client Portal and then two values pasted into PortfolioTrackr. You create a Flex Query, generate a token, and hand PortfolioTrackr the token and the query ID.

  1. Log in to the Interactive Brokers Client Portal and open the Flex Query settings (under reporting).
  2. Create a new Activity Flex Query that includes positions and trade history, and save it. Note its Query ID.
  3. Generate a Flex Web Service token in the same area. This is the read-only token.
  4. In PortfolioTrackr, choose Interactive Brokers as a direct connection.
  5. Paste the token and the Query ID, then confirm.

Once saved, PortfolioTrackr pulls your data and builds the read-only IBKR portfolio for you. From there, positions refresh about every 15 minutes on their own.

What to include in the Flex Query

Include open positions and trade history so both your current holdings and your real purchase dates come through. The more complete the query, the more accurate your cost basis and realised gain history will be. If a position looks off, the usual cause is a Flex Query that left out a section, which you can edit in the Client Portal and re-save.

What you see once the sync is working

Once connected, your IBKR holdings appear as a live, read-only portfolio with cost, current value and gain for every position. Because real purchase dates come through, your gain figures are based on what you actually paid, not a guessed entry price.

Concretely, you get:

Foreign holdings are handled with real precision. For a position bought in a currency different from your display currency, the cost is converted at the exchange rate of the day you bought it, the value at today's rate, and the currency gain or loss shows as its own line on the summary card and the P&L chart. PortfolioTrackr keeps 10 years of daily rates across 100 currencies, so a EUR or GBP position reads correctly in your home currency.

Setting price alerts on IBKR positions

You can add price-level alerts to any synced position: Target 1, Target 2 and a stop-loss level. Each position is checked once a minute while its market is open, and around the clock for crypto, with closed markets skipped at night, on weekends and on exchange holidays.

Alerts report status against your own levels, for example "Target 1 reached" or "stop-loss level reached", and reach you within a minute of your level being hit. They tell you where the price sits against the numbers you chose, nothing more. You can be notified by email, WhatsApp, Telegram or push on every plan, with SMS on Pro and Lifetime.

The honest limits you should know before connecting

Direct broker sync is genuinely on every plan, including the free trial and Starter, but a few real constraints apply. Stating them plainly is the point, because a connection that quietly stops is worse than one you understand.

None of this is a trick of the fine print. The one-year token is an Interactive Brokers rule, and the 30-day cleanup exists so lapsed accounts do not keep saved keys indefinitely. The reminder emails are there precisely so a yearly token refresh or a lapsed plan never catches you by surprise.

How this compares to screenshot and CSV import

Direct sync keeps itself current; manual methods are accurate snapshots you repeat. Both have a place, and both are available on every plan.

Who the IBKR sync is for, and who it is not

This connection is for Interactive Brokers holders who want their real positions tracked automatically without sharing trading access. If that describes you, the read-only Flex Query setup is the cleanest way to do it.

The bottom line

A read-only Flex Query connection turns your Interactive Brokers account into a live, automatically updated portfolio inside PortfolioTrackr, with real purchase dates, proper multi-currency handling and a fifteen-minute refresh, all without sharing a trading password.

The honest constraints are small and clearly signposted: syncing pauses if your plan lapses, the connection and its key are cleared after 30 days of no plan, the token refreshes once a year with a reminder, and disconnecting removes the broker's positions. Direct sync is on every plan, including the free trial, so you can see exactly how your IBKR holdings read before committing to anything.

Frequently asked questions

How do I connect Interactive Brokers to a portfolio tracker?

Create a read-only Activity Flex Query in the IBKR Client Portal, generate a Flex Web Service token, and paste the token and Query ID into PortfolioTrackr. It builds a read-only IBKR portfolio and syncs positions about every 15 minutes. No trading password is shared and nothing can be traded through the connection.

Is the IBKR Flex Query token safe to share?

Yes. A Flex Query token is read-only, so it can only pull the report you define. It cannot place trades, move money or change your account. PortfolioTrackr uses it purely to read positions and trade history, which is why nothing can be traded through the connection.

Does PortfolioTrackr sync IBKR on the free plan?

Yes. Direct broker sync with Interactive Brokers is on every plan, including the free trial and Starter. If your trial ends or a plan lapses, syncing pauses until a plan is active again, and the connection is removed after 30 days of no plan, with an email warning a week before.

How often does the IBKR connection update my positions?

Positions sync automatically about every 15 minutes while connected. Real trade history with purchase dates is imported too, so your cost basis reflects what you actually paid. The connection lives in its own read-only portfolio that does not count toward your portfolio limit.

Why does the IBKR token expire after a year?

Interactive Brokers sets Flex Query tokens to expire after one year for security. PortfolioTrackr emails a reminder before expiry with a NEW TOKEN button so the connection never silently dies. Re-issuing the token in the Client Portal and pasting it takes about two minutes.
